Updating your research areas

Research areas and expertise are the biggest lever you have on match quality.

Updated 9/19/2026

Your research areas and expertise terms are what the matching engine compares against every open funding program. They are the single biggest lever you have on the quality of your matches.

How to update them

  1. Open Profile & Settings → Profile.
  2. Edit Research Areas (broad domains) and Expertise (finer-grained terms).
  3. Remove anything stale — old topics keep pulling in matches you don't want.
  4. Save. Your matches are recalculated right away.

Where else your topics come from

  • ORCID — connect your iD once and your publication record stays in sync. This is the highest-trust source we use.
  • CV upload — expertise terms and prior funding are extracted automatically.
  • Your responses — marking matches Pursuing, Fit – Not Pursuing, or Not a Fit trains your own matching over time.

Write areas the way sponsors do

"Bone biology and mechanobiology" matches more programs than a lab nickname or an acronym only your colleagues use.
